Two girls arrested in India for posting and liking status on Facebook [Pix]

Shaheen Dhada is an unlikely looking protagonist in the battle under way in India to protect free speech from government restrictions in the new media age.
Slight and soft-spoken, Dhada perches on the edge of her bed in a purple-walled room that has been her own for the past 20 years. Outside, police officers are posted for her protection in the town of Palghar, 2 1/2 hours outside Mumbai.

The 21-year-old management science grad's Facebook post last week triggered her arrest and the wrath of local residents. Her "crime" was questioning the shutdown of Mumbai as mourners gathered for the cremation of Bal Thackeray, who had dominated the city's political stage for decades with cagey intimidation tactics.
In a Facebook post on Nov. 18, Dhada wrote: "Every day thousands of people die, but still the world moves on. ... Today, Mumbai shuts down out of fear, not out of respect."

Shaken by the reaction to his daughter's Facebook post, Farooq Dhada (shown here with Shaheen) says in India, freedom of speech "exists only on paper."

Within minutes, she got a call from a stranger. "And he told me, 'Do you really think whatever you posted is right?' " Dhada says. "I was actually confused about what he was asking for."
She hung up and deleted her comment. But by then a mob had gathered at her uncle's medical clinic around the corner, smashing windows and equipment, and vandalizing the operating room.
"Within 10 minutes, the police came and told me to come to the police station. I had to apologize in a written statement," says Dhada, who was held until 2 a.m. and then released on bail. A friend of hers, Renu Srinivasan, who "liked" the post, had been detained with her. A mob descended on the station. Dhada says she couldn't see it, but heard: "They were shouting, and at that time I was really very scared."

Meanwhile, Dhada's father, Farooq Dhada, says his family cowered inside their home for hours in the darkness, afraid the mob would come for them next.
The episode has shaken the Muslim father of two, who says he never expected things to escalate to such a frightening pitch. Reflecting on the incident days later, he says freedom of speech in India "exists only on paper." He says he doubts the common person feels any sense of security — no matter what religion they are.

8 Year-Old Girl Divorces Her Husband, 14, In India

An eight year old girl has become the youngest person ever to be divorced in India after she was married off aged just four. Fatima Mangre was given away by her father Anil, from the Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh state, in an arranged a marriage with 10-year-old Arjun Bakridi.

However when the boy arrived four years later to take his new bride away, Anil said he wanted the girl to wait until she was 18 before leaving.

He said: 'I finally realised that this practice of marrying off daughters so young was wrong and that she should have a childhood, and that it was my duty to provide that.' However Arjun's father Dipak was unhappy with the decision, and an argument broke out after which Anil filed for divorce.

The state government of India's has called for an inquiry into the incident that happened last week at Nakhi village in the Shravasti district of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

It ordered the probe after the New Delhi-based National Commission for Women (NCW) member Nirmala Samant sent a letter, demanding details of the divorce and threatening action against the parents of the girl and the boy. She said:

'This is a scandal, we need more details before taking action. The girl's father must answer why he married her off at four years old and the boy's father must answer why he agreed to such a marriage and then went to demand the girl when she is barely eight years old.

'This is insensitive, controversial and objectionable,' she added. However Fatima's father has already written to NCW, saying he should be pardoned because he stopped his daughter from being taken away by her in-laws.

'I have already admitted my mistake. Social pressures are high in our village. But the marriage has been annulled. I have admitted it was wrong to marry her off so early,' he said in a handwritten note.

He added: 'I now want to make things right. I want to give my daughter a good childhood. I will do everything to protect her.' Mr Bakridi has gone into hiding following the altercation. According to UNICEF, over 32.9 percent of the girls are married against the national average of 22.1 percent below the legally permissible age of 18 in the state.

The Shravasti district accounts for the majority underage weddings in India where the female literacy is just 19 per cent.

 But her father, Siddharth Sinune, said he cannot afford to buy her toys instead bringing home his prey from
his job as a snake catcher.

Before putting them back in the forests, he keeps them at home for his only daughters amusement. Siddharth said: Sidhi has an unusual bonding with the snakes and
surprisingly they too like to play with her.

Being a poor farmer, I cant buy her costly toys but I can get her snakes to play with.

A heartbroken dad cradles his 18-month-old daughter, who suffers from a rare disorder which has caused her head to swell up three times its normal size.Roona Begum, from Agartala, in north eastern India has hydrocephalus - a build up cerebrospinal fluid inside her skull.

Sufferers experience loss of coordination and speech and in long-term cases it can result in mental disability and death. A treatment is available, in which doctors drain the fluid, but it isn't available on India's version of the NHS.

 Roona's dad, 26-year-old Abdul Rahman, earns less than £2 a day working in a brick factory and can't afford to pay for her to be treated privately. India's rural development minister bitterly criticised the country's public health system in a speech last November - claiming the government was failing to provide enough help for the poor.

Indian Family Sets Themselves On Fire Due To hunger

Five people set themselves on fire in Gujarat, leaving one man dead as they protested against official plans to raze their home in a drive to remove illegal structures, police said yesterday.
According to GulfTimes

The five people, including three women, belonged to the same family and turned up at a city government office in Rajkot carrying kerosene-filled containers around noon yesterday, the police said.
Ram Sinh, a police official based in Rajkot said the group came to request the officials to stop demolition of illegal encroachments.
But when their request was not granted they poured kerosene on themselves and set themselves on fire,Sinh said.

Municipal officials in Rajkot, located 200km from the states main city Ahmedabad had declared the familys home illegal and issued an order to tear down the structure, leaving them in a desperate state, Sinh said.
The five have been identified as Rekha, Asha, Vasumati, Bharat and Girish …. Out of which Girish, who was 35-years-old succumbed to injuries in hospital,he said.
The burn victims sustained severe injuries and have been admitted to a local government hospital, where their condition is said to be stable, he added.
